(Caution reader, I used to word ‘gig’ far too frequently in the post below to the point that it lost all meaning for me, you have been warned)

Why is it still quite a ball ache for me to find upcoming local gigs for bands which Spotify and Last.fm know I listen to or might like to listen to. Between the two they know,

- where I live,
- which bands I like,
- friends of mine and what they like
- A fair amount of the gig listings for the region

But its still a roundabout affair getting from listening to new bands to keeping track of when they’re playing up or down the road. Its seems even more absurd considering that there’s surely money and face to be made here for these services which have questionable longterm financial stability.

Its also not just that both have the facilities to compile this information between them and put it right under my nose, but through a cross pollination of these and other online streaming services my listening habits have changed and expanded greatly across the past few years which in turn has directly influenced and increased my gig going (read ‘spending’) behaviour, and surely they’d like to make artists and rights holder aware of this. 17 days and no posts, tut tut tut. This was due to being very busy recently (which 9 on the list partially explains) and not for a lack of subject matter, in fact there’s been a tidal wave of subjects I could have written about that I felt overwhelmed at the prospect of catching up. Yes its technically now old news, but when the dates where announced this blog didn’t fully exist so you’ll have to excuse the less than >breaking news< of this post. As in past years Power to the Pixel 2009 will co-incide with the London Film Festival and will run this year from the 14th-16th of October (although events on the 16th I think are part of a ‘invite only’ experts think tank. November last year I attended a talk about digital piracy by the Industry Trust. Whilst I respect the work that the ‘IT’ undertake some of the comments made by the speakers at this talk seriously got my back up (in fact got my back up to the point that I had to detour via the apple store on route home to type up my rant) as they were hypocritical and misguided about their approaches to combating piracy through alternative distribution models.

However praise be as sanity may be slowly prevailing as in last weeks Guardian box office round up by Charles Gant came some incredibly sensible comments regarding the pre release leak of Wolverine online… (more…)
